Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 in which he loved taking part in various card games when he was young. He found himself getting really aggressive in these particular card games while competing against his dad. After finishing high school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a bit and relocated to New York to participate in some big-time chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were tough as he would play extensive hours and do not win a majority of the time. He earned some additional money by being an runner for the poker players. He judged he possibly could boost his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He brought about an attempt to get more sleep and focus even more on poker.

The real advancement in his abilities began when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest players would often challenge one another. He was able to access several of the best minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard would sharpen his strategic thinking abilities. He applied these strategy concepts to the game of No-Limit hold’em.

Howard also assisted his sister Annie Duke master poker. Annie was an excellent student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct choice. He told Annie to move out to Sin City and play in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie Duke is one of the strongest women players the poker world ever. He headed to Las Vegas in 1993 and played money games for the next decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
