Gus Hansen had an amazing year on the WPT where he was the only gambler to achieve last table in 3 of the competitions. Gus Hansen has appeared on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he paid $400, 000 to play. You may remember one of the largest pots in high stakes poker history against Daniel Negreanu. He secured a large pot with quads against Daniel’s full house. Hansen has made many televised poker appearances and is thought to be one of the strongest gamblers around the world. While participating in online poker, a different side of Hansen has appeared. Gus frequently participates in the 200/400 NL max buy in of Forty Thousand dollars. Hansen more often than not buys-in for the minimum of Sixteen Thousand dollars and plays very poorly. He waits for a good hand and then pushes all in. I accept that Hansen is an outstanding poker player but not even close to the everyday players at 200/400NL. Unless Gus is broke, he has no reason to play at the table with the minimum buy in.
Playing for the min takes most of the skill out of big stack poker. Hansen is supposed to be one of the greatest poker players in the world but he can’t buy in for the full amt.. I think television can skew our perception of the real world every now and then. The greatest players anywhere in the world might just be players you have won’t have heard of before. Gus can be seen gambling on net poker on Full Tilt. He generally plays in big stakes omaha hi-low and texas holdem. Gus has shown himself as a tournament player.
